In this trip we invite you to tour the regions of the Maragatería and Bierzo, so that you know one of the most magical and best known stages of St James' Way along with one of the most singular settings, Las Médulas, declared World Heritage Site.

We will leave Astorga from the LE-142 road, which runs parallel to St James' Way, and will soon make our first stop, in the famous village Castrillo de los Polvazares. A stop in time too, as the village remains as if having been brought from the past, with the stone paving, the painted  windows and doors and composed solely of traditional houses, most of them from the 19th century.

We will continue afterwards to one of the most outstanding points of St James' Way: the Ferro Cross. This milestone of the Way is located in the highest spot of the pilgrims route, in the line which divides the regions of  La Maragatería and tEl  Bierzo. Here in this hypnotic place, in the presence of this intersection, pushed by tradition, pilgrims leave a stone as an offer when passing it.

Further on, at one side of the route, we will find the forge of Compludo, traditional forging     to temple iron, keeping the machinery typical of the Middle Ages, moved by water.

The road will finish in Ponferrada, capital of the Bierzo,  where we will take the N-006 road, taking us to the feudal Villafranca del Bierzo. Born rooted to the Way by French monks of Cluny to serve pilgrims, it soon becomes in the manorialism and marquisate seen in the streets, houses and castle. Here the Romanesque  church of James is set too, end of the Way for those pilgrims who not capable of continuing obtain their jubilee here.

After Villafranca, we will leave aside St James' Way and set off to Las Médulas. Superb landscape resulting from the mining destruction, in which gold extraction demolished a whole mount creating  a red and green nature, strange and fascinating landscape, proof of the human  talent and ambition.

This tour will allow you to know the most interesting and magical  part of St James' Way trough León, to know populations full of heritage and history and to admire unique landscapes.
